For the Christian, instructions for life, death, and the hereafter come in three forms: experience, scriptural truths, and the inner whisper of the Holy Spirit. This article will focus upon life limitations due to a personal refusal to receive instructions from the Holy Spirit.

The mere fact of being alive brings about experience. This training field is not Christian exclusive. Every living being will experience life. It begins in the soup of the womb, continues through the physical senses of touch, taste, sight, sound, and the invisible things that are known without understanding. It concludes with a personal appearance before the Almighty God.

Though Christian sensitive, the Holy Scriptures are also without Christian exclusiveness. They are recorded life principles. When applied to daily living they will produce a better purpose, and a greater way of living, loving, and being. To the Christian, they will generate an ever-increasing awareness of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. To the lost and undone, they can bring about the faith that leads unto salvation.

The inner whisper of the Holy Spirit is private to Christians. Though unbelievers may receive an outward prompting, they can never hear that amazing inner voice. This comes about only through the indwelling presence of God within man, and an exclusive one-to-one relationship that can only be known by those who are called out and set apart by God himself. It can happen only when his spirit becomes one with our spirit.

One With The Spirit

Cults, even as they chase the secular presentation of supernatural things, declare that the Holy Spirit is but an impersonal “projection” from God. Were this so, it would eliminate the personal indwelling that is exclusive to those who are saved by the power of God and not of themselves. A projection must continually pass through the senses of the flesh. An indwelling God is an every present spirit that is one with our spirit.

Intellect, emotion, and will: these three are the components of personality. Intellect permits awareness of self-existences and knowledge of the world around us. Emotions bring about feelings for self and others. Will is that which brings us to purposeful action.

Experiencing the Intellect of God

The Holy Spirit has intelligence. Scripture tells us of how the Spirit searches the heart of God so that we may know the things that God has given unto us.

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God,” (1 Cor. 2:9-12).

If intelligence is knowledge, and if the Spirit imparts knowledge to us; then the extent of our intelligence is limited by how much of His imparted intellect we are willing to receive. A life that does not include the knowledge of God lacks fulfillment. Thus the lost soul continually seeks to satisfy a desire to touch the supernatural.

Experiencing the Emotions of God

The Holy Spirit feels emotions. We are told not to “grieve” the Hold Spirit of God. When we refuse to respond to the knowledge that he imparts unto us, we cause sorrow within his heart.

Though the bible links many emotions to the Holy Spirit, we will focus on love. By common sense and personal experiences, we understand that one who cannot feel love cannot share love. By this we also know that the Holy Spirit loves.

“And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us,” (Romans 5:5).

So now we see that, just as our knowledge is limited to our willingness to receive teaching from the Spirit, so too is our ability to love and to receive love limited by our willingness or unwillingness to receive love as presented through the Holy Spirit. A life that does not include the emotions of God lacks love. Thus the lost soul continually seeks to gratify the need for love through fleshly experiences, even if those experiences are limited to acts of the eyes, the ears, and the mind, even if those experiences are bound up in helping others so that we may be loved.

Experiencing the Will of God

To will is to desire that something come to pass. The desire for something is no guarantee of success any more than is the will of a blind man to see a certainty of having his sight return. God has willed that all be saved, but not all are.

Thus is the will of the Holy Spirit. If we are the sons of God, he leads us into freedom for it is his will that we serve and worship God in spirit and in truth.

“If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law,” (Gal. 5:18).

It is also his will to teach us, to comfort us, and to quicken us. He bears testimony of the cross and of Jesus and of salvation through faith in Jesus. If, through will power alone, a blind man could force his eyes to see, this he would do. Not so, is the Holy Spirit.

In the life of a Christian, the will of the Holy Spirit will prevail. God has promised to complete the work that he began within us. The Holy Spirit is a seed of promise. In Christ, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are a new creation. We are changed, we are changing, and we will be changed.

Thus we see that without the receiving the will of God, it is impossible for man to experience the joy of goodness. A life that does not include the will of God lacks the indwelling power to know peace. Every man desires to be good. But goodness escapes our greatest efforts. We all understand that there is a standard that excels all that man, of himself, can or will establish.

Thus the lost soul, even the blackest of hearts, seeks to reach that standard, even if it is only a standard of being called good at being evil. There is an outer voice that proclaims goodness impossible without a living knowledge of Christ. So we search, and we reach, and we fall. The lost souls forever resist the truth.

To experience the will of God, one must submit to that will. Understand that the lost heart can never experience true life. Admit your failures and your inability to will your own eyes to open and see. By faith, believe upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You too will then experience peaceful the inner whisper of the Holy Spirit of God.
