Last year Americans grumbled over the high cost of oil. This year we have an overabundance of the crude. In fact, one could say that we have so much oil that it is coming out of our nostrils.

This is not a new thing with the Creator. In times past, he dealt with the complaints of a whining people in like manner. Perhaps you have never heard the story. It goes like this:

In response to their fearful cries for food, God answered the complaints of the people by providing manna from heaven, a simple seed like substance that fell upon the morning dew, tasted as fresh oil, and was good for the making of cakes. An easier labor for food, no one could have asker. Yet the people never knew how to be satisfied with the simple provisions of God. In a time so short that one can barely conceive they sprang forth with a new moaning. They began to cry for meat, the call upon them like a great evil lusting. The Holy Spirit records it in this manner:

“And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:” (Numbers 11: 4,5).

Oh how hard were their hearts, how great their contempt for the God that supplied all their needs. They were like unto dumb beast, following every new tongue that spoke against the Lord. Thus they were dealt with in a mode that is suiting to a foolish and rebellious people. God spoke to Moses in this manner:

“And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?” (Numbers 11:18-20).

Perhaps you see no parallels between the problems of this historic Israel and the problems of this modern America. Perhaps you too are despising the LORD. If so, then may God have mercy upon you.

These are not the ends of the judgments; they are but the beginnings. Let our moaning be for our souls and not for our possessions. Let our cries be thanksgivings and not curses. Let our wailing be over remission of sin and not shame for getting caught. Let our praise be not to a fallen nation but to a risen Savior.

And you shall NOT have oil until it comes out at your nostrils and it becomes loathsome unto you, for you shall be blessed and not cursed.
