Emotional Sickness. Physical Sickness. Spiritual Diseases. Does God Still Heal?
To many onlookers, heathen and Christian alike, it may seem that the modern church has no ability to bring forth true physical, mental, or emotional healings. Sometimes sincere people, following seemingly sound bible doctrine, gather around the sick, stretch forth hands of faith, and pray for God to intervene in a known sickness. Yet the result is far from conclusive. The lame still limp. The tortured soul remains in an emotional darkness. The world of the mentally disturbed remains turbulent and confused. Thus some dare ask if God still heals.
To avoid this question, honest and sincere men attempt to make excuses for themselves and for God. They strive to justify their failed efforts. They seek to save face before the congregation and the world. It is never enough to let what seems an unanswered prayer stand as it stands. And when someone questions the truth of the event, they are branded as troublemakers and doubters.
None stop to question our methods and motives for attempting to bring forth a healing. None take notice of our personal life-style choices for good health and a sound mind. None address the quality of our daily relationship with God.
So we cry forth, “The healing is on the way”, or “It will happen when we enter into eternity”. Thus we seek to find evidence of time-lagged scriptural related healings. Such are our excuses, all of which reflect our fear of losing face before men rather than God.
Make no mistake. God has no need for excuses. He rightly functions according to his own purposes and plans. No man instructions him. No man guides him. He needs no human counselor. It is recorded. It is stated:
“Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high,” (Job 21:22). And again it is written in the book of Romans as this “ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?” (11:33-35).
In the course of human living, four areas of sickness exist:
· Emotional
· Mental
· Physical
· Spiritual
These areas often intertwine. Mental illness can bring about emotional and physical reactions. Emotional suffering can trigger physical and mental health conditions. Physical infirmities can overwhelm the emotions and the mental stability of any person. The state of one’s spiritual health directly affects each physical-world health issue. If a Christian is not careful, the reverse happens, and physical-world related sicknesses affect our spiritual strength.
Does God Still Heal?
The physical-world healings of God are seen every day. He heals through doctors, and nature, and the power of the Spirit.
Does he still heal via miraculous methods? This too, we see from time to time. By miraculous, I do not mean that an x-ray report changed. But I will not go there at this time for that is an entirely different article in itself. Miraculous healings are the instantaneous results of God bending or breaking his natural physical-world laws. They are the equivalent of gravity suddenly ceasing to function in a given and specific area of space and time.
Miraculous healings are accompanied by a release of God power from within a living person. They have nothing to do with the medical functions of the physical world. See this example of a woman who suffered from a blood disease. She had seen many doctors to no effect. She came to Jesus Christ to be healed. The short of the story is written like this:
“And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?” (Mark 5:26-30).
The word “virtue”, as used in this scripture, defines itself as “power”. Notice that Jesus felt power leave him. This then, is the source of miraculous healings. They come only as the result of a real and tangible release of spiritual power. Men seldom, even Godly men, seldom touch this depth of spiritual awareness.
Spiritual Power Known Only Once In My Christian Life
Once, during my time in prison, a handful of men gathered in a circle and began to pray. I was one of those men. As we prayed, an atmospheric change came over the area. A spiritual power began to manifest itself. One of the men, I know not whom for I did not look up, began to pray in an unknown tongue.
The power that had manifested itself in the air suddenly entered my body. I have never known such an awesome might, not before and not since. I knew, without doubt, that I could speak in English the words that that man was speaking in an unknown tongue. I did not know in my mind what was being said, but I knew that if I would only open my mouth, the words would come as I spoke.
But I was afraid and did not speak.
After a few moments of holding myself in check, that enormous sense of virtue departed. Shortly thereafter, the man doing the speaking in an unknown tongue ceased to pray. Later, without me bringing the matter up, one of the other men in that group asked me if I had felt anything strange. It turned out that he too had been given the power to interpret. He too had been too afraid to respond. I believe that God may have given opportunity to every man in that circle.
Now though this event did not involve healings, it did involve the power that must be present before any form of miraculous activity can manifest itself. Whether talking about healings, the interpretation of tongues, or the moving of mountains, I believe that men must act according to faith in accordance with God’s written word. I believe also that you will know when God has chosen to instill within you a specific virtue to birth a miracle rather than a daily blessing.
Does God still heal?
Each and every day. It begins by believing in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is evidenced by a restoring of the heart and a spiritual rebirth. It carries forth into a renewing of the mind. It most often happens by living according to the wisdom of God’s words. Sometimes, it births a special power to perform a special work that exceeds the realms of this physical world.
